Co-curricular Activities
1. ACINUS-2018

Department of respiratory medicine conducted Annual conference of respiratory, critical care & sleep medicine on 22-23 Dec 2018 at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, auditorium

The ACINUS-2018 was attended by eminent speakers of national repute including HOD’s Pulmonary Medicine Department of AIIMS & PGI. The CME was attended by 291 delegates

The delegates of ACINUS-2018 were awarded 4 CME credit points by MMC.

Poster & Oral Presentation

Total 23 posters were displayed in poster exhibition area. The two best posters were awarded case prizes.

Dr Atul Francis is got the first prizes in “Recurrrent pulmonary thromboembolism in a case of combied antithrombin III & protein c deficinevy”.

Dr Shahzad Mirza is got the second prize in “role of CBNAAT in early & rapid detection of pulmonary & extra pulmonary tuberculosis & rifampicin resistance in a tertiary care set up with special reference to pediatric cases”

Oral Presentation

Dr Swarupa Hatolkar is got the prize topic is “ Molecular epidemiology of mycobacterium tuberculosis”.


The Vidyapeeth gold medal for the student standing first at post graduvate ,medical degree examination in pulmoanry medicine subject in the group of allied to medicne subject in the year 2018 is awarded to “Dr Arpan Anand Dhoka”.


Last year in Thane there were 2330 cases of tuberculosis out of which approximately 1200 were drug resistant cases.

Spitting in public places is one of the major reasons for spread of TB. Apart from TB, spitting can cause pneumonias/flu which are a burden on our health care system.

Spitting can really deface the roads and public places and is definitely not civilised act.

We not spitting isn’t enough. We’ve to stop one and all from spitting in public places. So let’s come together to fight this social evil seen in all classes of citizens.

As part of this movement we’ve created an event at Kashinath Ghanekar auditorium Thane on 04/05/2019 at 11 am in which 1200 auto rickshaw drivers/ bus drivers and all others present will take a pledge of not spitting in public places and preventing others from doing so.

Hence all are requested to be present for this movement and contribute towards good health and hygiene. Following dignitaries were present for the function

  3. Traffic Police,
  4. Collector,
  5. Indian Medical Association
  6. City TB Officer.

The auditorium was full including the balcony.

4. SIMVENT 2019

Dr M S Barthwal, Professor & HOD, participated as a faculty in ”SIMVENT 2019”organized by Department of critical care medicine ,ruby hall clinic Pune, Dr D Y Patil Medical College, Pune & Healthcare training Asia held on 26/05/2019, in auditorium Dr D Y Patil Medical college, Pimpri , Pune.

He delivered a talk on topic “Mechanical ventilation in COPD & Asthma

5. NAPCON-2018

3. National conference on pulmonary diseases – NAPCON-2018 was attended delegate/faculty in held at Gujarat university convention Centre, Ahmedabad from 30/11/2018-02/12/2018 Gujarat medical council has granted 9/10 credit hours by following faculty and residents

    • - Chaired session on COPD
    • - Delivered a talk on Asthma
  • Dr Gitartha Baruah- JR-3 is participated in quiz.
  • Dr Shubhi Singhal, JR-2 presented a poster“An unsual bacterial pneumonia in an immuncompetent pediatric patient” which won 2nd prize.
  • Dr Nirmala M.A , JR-2 presented a poster “Various clinical outcomes of organizing pneumonias :A case series” which won 3rd prize.
  • Dr Akansha Adile presented a poster“ A giant pulmonary hamartomma case report”.

These prizes were chosen out of 220 case reports presented in NAPCON 2018.



6. Best User Award

Dr Nitin Gaikwad, Professor has been awarded the Best User Award of the Central Library for the year 2017-2018 on 01/06/2018 in Dr D.Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital. & Research Centre, Pimpri , Pune

7. PULMOCON 2019

Dr M S Barthwal, Professor & HOD, has participated in the 21st Annual National Conference of APCCM ”PULMOCON 2019”, organized by association of pulmonologists Thrissur(APT), held on 18th&19th May 2019 at Thrissur as a faculty. He delivered a talk on topic “Biological in Asthma- Will it revolutionize the asthma management

8. Sleep Medicine Workshop

Department of Respiratory Medicine conducted “DPU Pulmonary Update- 2016”on 1st & 2nd October 2016. The “Sleep Medicine workshop” was conducted on 1st October 2016 by Dr. M. S. Barthwal & Dr. Raja Yarra Ramakrishanan who has 16 years’ experience in Sleep Medicine. The workshop was attended by 40 Delegates& was highly appreciated.

1st Prize-Trophy & cash prize of 10,000/- won by AFMC
2nd Prize- Trophy & cash prize of 5,000/- won by KEM Hospital.

IRCU Visit by Dr. D. Behera& Dr. RandeepGueleria (2nd Oct 2016)

The CME was conducted by eminent speakers of national repute including HOD’s Pulmonary Medicine Department of AIIMS & PGI. The CME was attended by 160 delegates. The dignitaries from AIIMS & PGI Visited the new hospital complex & were highly impressed. HOD PGI Chandigarh mentioned in visitors book that why government set up cannot be like this.

The department of Microbiology & department of Respiratory Medicine jointly conducted a Integrated Teachingprogramme topic “Molecular diagnosis in TB” on 2nd February 2016 from 2 pm to 4 pm at Microbiology Department.

Fibrotic Bronchoscopy Handling & Maintains workshop was conducted on 13th December 2015 from 9 am to 2 pm in the department of Respiratory Medicine. The workshop was conducted by senior technical officer from Olympus, Bombay. The aim of the workshop was to familiarize residents & junior faculty about the intricate components of bronchoscope, its handling cleaning, disinfection & sterilization.


Our department was conducted by seminar topic “MDR/XDR TB” on 10th December 2013. The seminar was attended by 70 delegates

Our Department conducted ” Hands On Training on new spirometry software OMNIA” by Mr. Pramod Pasricha, Application Engineer on 3rd August 2017.

Extra-curricular Activities
1. Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Department of respiratory medicine had arranged training session on pulmonary rehabilitation for residents and faculty on 23/08/2018. A talk was delivered by Dr. Gaurang Baxi, Associate Professor, Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Physiotherapy, pimpri.

Total 16 faculty and residents are attended this training session

2. Guest Lecture

Guest Lecture on “Drug Resistant Tuberculosis in Children” was organized by faculty & residents of Respiratory Medicine on 09/04/2018

Guest speaker was Dr. Avika Dixit, MBBS MPH FAAP,Clinical Fellow in Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Boston Children's Hospital Research Fellow, Farhat Lab, Department of Biomedical Informatics, Harvard Medical School, USA

The guest lecture was attended by Dr Rabindra N, Misra HOD of Microbiology, Dr A.L. Kakarni, HOD Of Medicine & Dr. M. S. Barthwal , HOD of Respiratory Medicine & residents of respective department.


Department of respiratory medicine organized workshop on bronchoscopy on 08/03/2019 in collaboration with Olympus, India. The workshop was attended by all residents, faculties and respiratory technician.

Guest Lecture on “Intervention study to reduce alcohol use among TB and HIV cases” was organized by faculty & residents of Respiratory Medicine on 10/06/2019.

Guest speaker was Prof. Geeta Chandar from Johns Hopkins.

The guest lecture was attended by Dr A. L.Kakrani, Dr M S Barthwal, Dr Nishi Suryavanshi, Dr Gauri Dhumal, Dr Sachin Atre and respiratory medicine Department Staff attended meeting & residents of department.

Dr. M. S. Barthwal delivered a talk on “Difficult Asthma- A Practical Approach”

Dr. M.S. Barthwal was attended NAPCON 26th November 2016. He was awarded fellowship of Indian chest society (FICS)at this conference.


Dr. M.S. Barthwal attended NAPCON 2017 at Kolkata from 17/11/2017 to 19/11/2017. He was award best ‘Letter to Editor’ award by Indian chest society. He also took part as panelist & Chairperson..


Dr. MahaFarat, MD MSC, Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Informatics Assistant Physician Pulmonary and Critical Care delivered a talk on “Whole Genome Sequencing to diagnose Drug Resistant TB”at our department.

Medico-Social Activities

On the occasion of ‘World TB Day’ on 24th March 2019 Department of Respiratory Medicine arranged programme:

Lecture of RNTCP Sensitization “Programme at YCMH on RNTCP by Dr.Sudhir Dahitankar Medical Officer on 22nd March 2019.

  1. Poster competition on the theme of “Green Diwali” done on 20th October 2014 in collaboration with College of Nursing Street play organized on the same occasion.
  2. World TB Day, 24th March 2015 was celebrated and Street play organized on the same occasion. Lecture was delivered on “What is the Risk of TB for Health Care Workers” by Dr. Tushar Sahasrabudhe.
  3. World No Tobacco Day, 1st June 2015 was celebrated.
  4. On the event of World TB Day (22nd March 2016) Department of Respiratory Medicine arranged a poster display in OPD complex for educating patients regarding Tuberculosis. The importance of DOTS in Pulmonary Tuberculosis was conveyed through a play in the OPD complex. The play enacted by Dr. Sudhir Dahitankar, TB Health Visitor Hanumant & Lab technician Preeti. Dr. M. S. Barthwal, Professor & HOD was invited as a speaker in CME at YCM Hospital on 22nd March 2016. He spoke on the topic of “Pitfalls in the management of Tuberculosis.” The same talk was also arranged for faculty& residents in college auditorium on 23rd March 2016.


3. On the event of ‘World TB Day’ on 24th March 2017 Department of Respiratory Medicine arranged a poster display in OPD complex for educating patients regarding Stop TB. We arranged RNTCP sensitization programme for sweepers & their supervisors. A talk was delivered by Dr. Sudhir Dahitankar, Medical Officer, RNTCP on 29th March 2017. We had also arranged a seminar for all the faculties & PG students in our college auditorium. Dr. M. S. Barthwal, Professor & HOD & Dr. Nitin Gaikwad, Professor talked on the topic of “Pitfalls in the management of tuberculosis”. Dr. Sudhir Dahitankar, Medical Officer, RNTCP spoke on the topic of “RNTCP updates & daily regimen on 3th April 2017".


4. Dr. Kirti Yadav & Dr. Mahavir Bagrecha received the first prize for poster titled “Association between BMI and Asthma Severity”.

5. Pulmonology Update 2017 was conducted on Sunday, 21st May 2017 at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College in collaboration with Department of Respiratory Medicine & Indian Medical Association (Pimpri, Chinchwad, Bhosari Branch).
