  • Rahul Salunkhe (Prof & HOD) :-

In a rare and puzzling case at a private hospital in Pune, a 23-year-old woman presented with a femur fracture—the strongest bone in the body—after merely getting out of bed. Initial assessments ruled out trauma, prompting doctors to investigate further. Tests revealed that the woman suffered from a rare metabolic disorder caused by abnormally high levels of parathormone, a hormone that regulates calcium levels in the body.

The excess parathormone had severely depleted calcium from her bones, making them brittle and prone to fractures. Further imaging and nuclear scans revealed an ectopic parathyroid adenoma, a rare tumor located in her chest rather than the neck. The tumor, embedded in the thymus gland near the heart, was producing the excess hormone.

Dr. Samir Gupta, head of surgical oncology, successfully removed the tumor through video-assisted thoracoscopic (keyhole) surgery. The patient recovered well post-surgery and was prescribed calcium and vitamin D supplementation, with her condition being closely monitored.

Doctors emphasized the importance of investigating unexplained fractures, especially in young patients, as they may point to serious underlying health conditions that require timely diagnosis and treatment.

Such fractures in young people may not only be indicative of underlying systemic

diseases or bone pathology, but also demand timely intervention to restore function and prevent complications.
